چکیده

Black hole–neutron star (BHNS) binaries are important sources of gravitational waves for second-generation interferometers, and BHNS mergers are also a proposed engine for short, hard gamma-ray bursts. The behavior of both the spacetime (and thus the emitted gravitational waves) and the neutron star matter in a BHNS merger depend strongly and nonlinearly on the black hole’s spin. While there is a significant possibility that astrophysical black holes could have spins that are nearly extremal (i.e. near the theoretical maximum), to date fully relativistic simulations of BHNS binaries have included black-hole spins only up to S/M=0.9, which corresponds to the black hole having approximately half as much rotational energy as possible, given the black hole’s mass. In this paper, we present a new simulation of a BHNS binary with a mass ratio q = 3 and black-hole spin S/M=0.97, the highest simulated to date. We find that the black hole’s large spin leads to the most massive accretion disk and the largest tidal tail outflow of any fully relativistic BHNS simulations to date, even exceeding the results implied by extrapolating results from simulations with lower black-hole spin. The disk appears to be remarkably stable. We also find that the high black-hole spin persists until shortly before the time of merger; afterwards, both merger and accretion spin down the black hole. Black Hole-Neutron Star Binary Merger Calculations: GRB Progenitors and the Stability of Mass Transfer

We have calculated the first dynamical evolutions of merging black hole-neutron star binaries that treat the combined spacetime in a nonperturbative general relativistic framework. Using the conformal flatness approximation, we have studied how the location of the tidal disruption radius with respect to the the black hole horizon and innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) affects the qualitativ...

On the Formation of an Eccentric Disk via Disruption of a Bulge Core near a Massive Black Hole

We consider the possibility that an infalling bulge core or stellar cluster could form an eccentric disk, following tidal disruption by a massive black hole in the center of a galaxy. As a function of central black hole mass, we constrain the core radii and central densities of cluster progenitors capable of becoming nearly Keplerian disks which can support lopsided slow modes. We find that pro...

Does the Collapse of a Supramassive Neutron Star Leave a Debris Disk?

One possible channel for black hole formation is the collapse of a rigidly rotating massive neutron star as it loses its angular momentum or gains excessive mass through accretion. It was proposed that part of the neutron star may form a debris disk around the black hole. Such short-lived massive disks could be the sources of powerful jets emitting cosmological gamma-ray bursts. Whether the col...

Prospects for gravitational-wave observations of neutron-star tidal disruption in neutron-star-black-hole binaries.

For an inspiraling neutron-star-black-hole (NS-BH) binary, we estimate the gravity-wave frequency f(td) at the onset of NS tidal disruption. We model the NS as a tidally distorted, homogeneous, Newtonian ellipsoid on a circular, equatorial geodesic around a Kerr BH. We find that f(td) depends strongly on the NS radius R, and estimate that LIGO-II (ca. 2006-2008) might measure R to 15% precision...

Tidal Interaction between a Fluid Star and a Kerr Black Hole: Relativistic Roche-Riemann Model

We present a semi-analytic study of the equilibrium models of close binary systems containing a fluid star (mass m and radius R0) and a Kerr black hole (mass M) in circular orbit. We consider the limit M ≫ m where spacetime is described by the Kerr metric. The tidally deformed star is approximated by an ellipsoid, and satisfies the polytropic equation of state. The models also include fluid mot...
